CHEM-CRETE® MCE™
Multi-crystalline Admixture for Improving Concrete Durability and Performance
Every strong concrete structure starts long before the pour, in the mix design. Get the chemistry right at that stage, and you’re building in strength, density, and water resistance with a concrete durability solution. That’s the idea behind International Chem-Crete’s Concrete Admixtures and Enhancers line to provide exceptionally durable concrete, built from the inside out. This is very important in pavement construction, and more particularly for pavement durability with 1L cement problems (or PLC concrete problems).
For any structural construction company that’s watched a “perfectly good” pour crack, spall, or let water through within a few years, the message is simple: the mix matters as much as the placement. Our Integral waterproofing admixture (concrete crystalline admixture) is formulated to provide concrete with the internal resistance it needs to perform for decades, not just pass inspection on day one.
Why the Right Admixture Changes Everything
Not all concrete admixtures have the same purpose, and that’s exactly the point. Among concrete admixture companies, International Chem-Crete has spent nearly 50 years focused on one core problem: how do you ensure concrete durability and make concrete inherently resistant to the things that destroy it, such as water intrusion, chloride penetration, alkali-silica reaction, and drying shrinkage, rather than just dealing with the symptoms after the concrete is in place.
This focus is reflected in the products that form the core of this category:
- CHEM-CRETE® MAG-SIL®: A powdered intermixed concrete enhancer that’s part of Chem-Crete’s dual crystallization family. Incorporated at the batching stage (much like fly ash, slag, or silica fume), MAG-SIL enhances the compressive and flexural strength, increases workability, lowers permeability, reduces ASR potential, and cuts chloride intrusion, all from within the mix itself.
- CHEM-CRETE® MCE™: A multi-crystalline liquid admixture is designed to block the pores and the concrete matrix from the inside and improve long-term concrete durability and performance before the structure ever faces its first freeze-thaw cycle or deicing season. As a permeability-reducing admixture (PRA), it is ideal for sustainable infrastructure and pavement construction. MCE is simply dosed into the mixture as a concrete enhancer, similar to dosing other concrete liquid admixtures.
Both are based on the same principle: concrete admixtures for waterproofing should not merely be applied to the surface to prevent water from seeping through; they should change the internal pore structure of the concrete and stop water from seeping in in the first place.
Finding the Best Admixture for Concrete, for the Job
There’s no single answer to what’s the best admixture for concrete; it depends on what the structure needs to resist and when in the process you’re able to intervene. If you’re a contractor, engineer, or specifier looking to build resistance in at the batching stage rather than treat problems after the fact, MAG-SIL and MCE give you options that work with standard batching processes and familiar SCM handling, without complicating your mix design workflow.
It’s also worth noting that this category is not the place for an accelerator admixture in concrete or concrete admixtures for high early strength, where the goal is faster set times or early-age strength gain rather than long-term durability. Chem-Crete’s enhancers are designed for the opposite end of the timeline: long-lasting performance, when the structure is dealing with real-world traffic, weather, and chemical exposure rather than a 28-day test cylinder.
Built for Structures That Can’t Afford to Fail
Concrete is the material that’s expected to last, which is why it’s a choice specified by all kinds of entities, including highway departments, airport authorities, municipalities, and engineers. When the underlying mix is fighting permeability, ASR, and chloride intrusion from day one, that promise gets a lot easier to keep.
That’s the benefit a structural construction company reaps when it addresses these admixtures in its project mix design in the beginning. It leads to fewer surprises during the service life of the pavement, bridge, or structure, and less need for repair and retrofit down the line.
Concrete Admixtures and Enhancers is a foundational category in the Chem-Crete lineup, and that’s by design. Getting the internal chemistry right is often the single highest-leverage decision on a project, long before anyone talks about sealers, coatings, or repairs.
FAQs
Que : Can MAG-SIL and MCE be used together in the same mix?
Ans : Each of MCE and MAG-Sil is a crystalline waterproofing admixture that also enhances concrete Compressive Strength. Each is designed to work as a standalone enhancer added at batching, and project-specific compatibility should be confirmed with our technical data sheets or our team, since mix designs vary by project and local materials.
Que : Do these admixtures replace the need for surface sealers or waterproofing treatments?
Ans : Not entirely. They reduce permeability and improve internal resistance to water and chlorides, but can still be used in conjunction with surface protection in many projects to provide maximum long-term protection, especially in high exposure environments. This depends on the project requirement.
Que : How are these products added to a concrete mix?
Ans : MAG-SIL is a powdered admixture added at the time of batching, similar to fly ash or silica fume, or incorporated into the cement at the point of manufacture. MCE is also introduced during batching to work throughout the concrete matrix; it can also be added to a concrete trans-mixer before placement.
